Whether you’re fresh out of a relationship that wasn’t quite serving you or you’ve been single for quite some time now, looking for genuine connections with people who respect and appreciate you is always a step in the right direction. And while you may be ready to find the real connections that will serve your life, you may not know exactly where or how to look for them. So whether you’re on the apps or out at the bars, you may be on the hunt for some relationship tips to make real connections.

No matter what your dream significant other looks like to you, there is bound to be someone out there who makes you happy. Through your own self development practices, some open expectations and learning to look in the right places, you can find the real connections you’re looking for. No matter where you are in your journey, these are some relationship tips that can help you find what you’re truly looking for.

1. Stop Settling

Unfortunately, many women — and people in general — are used to settling in relationships and allowing people to treat them with much less respect than they deserve. And — just like you’d probably tell a trusted friend — you deserve someone who meets the standards, boundaries and expectations that you know you want in a significant other. While settling might be easier in the moment, it won’t make you happy in the long run. If you haven’t already, it might be time to start listening to yourself about what you want and stop settling for less.

2. Get Off the Apps

This one might be a bit controversial — and depend on what apps you use and how you use them — but you might just find that it can change a lot about your outlook on dating and finding love. A lot of dating apps aren’t focused on real connections, serious relationships or even solid conversations between people. In fact, many people find apps to be more reminiscent of games to scroll through when bored. So it’s no wonder why so many people turn to apps without the intention of finding any real connections. By getting off the apps, you can start taking relationships a bit more seriously and be more intentional about the kinds of people you connect with.

3. Stop With the Delete-and-Shuffle

Speaking of the apps, have you already been here before? Thought so — plenty of people have. In fact, it’s somewhat of a common scenario at this point. Lots of people find themselves fed up with the apps, delete them, spend some time off, but inevitably download them right back again and pick up right where they started. Just like plenty of other tech and social media, dating apps can have somewhat of an addictive quality. But jumping back onto the apps after a few months without them won’t do you any favors. If you can abstain, try and stick with it.

4. Make the Move

While some people still think ladies shouldn’t make the first move, that mindset is a bit old fashioned, and what’s more, it could be keeping you from going for the connections you truly want. Texting first, offering to buy someone a drink and asking your crush out on a date might seem a bit daunting at first, but those actions can all help you get closer to getting to know someone you’re interested in. Dating is about striving for equal effort and mutual respect, and making the move can show that you’re not only interested, but invested.

5. Don’t Undersell Yourself

Looking for real connections and relationships that serve you is about finding someone who will respect you for the amazing person you know you are — so how can you expect others to do that if you don’t know your own worth? While there’s clearly a place for humility and grace, you also shouldn’t undersell yourself or put yourself down, because that gives others license to do the same. Take compliments, talk about things you’re excited about and share your accomplishments freely. You may attract someone confident and radiant that way.

Finding Real Connections

If you’re looking for deep, genuine relationships that are built on a foundation of respect and connection, the power often lies within you. By avoiding apps that treat dating like a game, refusing to settle and being confident as you search for a relationship that will fit you well, you can attract people into your life who will align with what you’re looking for.
