Some peptide-based treatments do have strong scientific backing, but are the claims circulating online actually true? Are they actually safe? Although “peptide” is usually used as though it refers to a single ingredient, it actually describes a large group of compounds. Peptides are short chains of amino acids, the building blocks of protein, and your body naturally produces many of them. That broad definition is one of the reasons peptides appear in so many different areas of health and wellness. Some of them have been used in medicine for decades. For instance, insulin is a peptide hormone that has helped people manage diabetes since 1922. Others are much newer, such as GLP-1 medications like semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Mounjaro), which are prescribed for type 2 diabetes and weight management. The surge in interest comes from both science and marketing.
